New pricing rule since April 1, 2026

Stations may now raise prices only once per day at 12:00

Germany introduced a new market rule for E5, E10 and diesel: since April 1, 2026, stations may increase a fuel price only once per day, and only at 12:00. Price cuts remain allowed at any time. For drivers, this makes the hours before noon more strategic, because later upward adjustments can no longer be repeated throughout the day.

What this changes

The period before 12:00 matters more

The rule does not guarantee permanently lower prices. It does, however, limit multiple spontaneous mark-ups within the same day. If you compare prices in the morning and use alerts, you can react earlier to the only permitted daily increase.

Time window

12:00

A station may raise the price of a fuel only at this time, and only once per day.

Applies to

E5, E10, diesel

The rule applies to the main road-fuel types relevant for drivers in Germany.

Penalty

up to €100,000

According to the Bundestag, violations of the new pricing rule can lead to fines.

How Tank Alert interprets it

  • Before 12:00, direct comparison becomes more important because the market can no longer push prices upward repeatedly later in the day.
  • After 12:00, price reductions remain possible. A later refuel can still pay off; only the pattern behind price movements changes.
  • ADAC notes that the rule does not automatically guarantee a lower daily average. Drivers still need to compare prices instead of trusting a single blanket time recommendation.

Annual Outlook

What to expect this year

Iran Crisis & Oil Price

ADAC: slight easing

Iran Crisis & Oil Price

On April 9, 2026, ADAC reported a first slight easing in diesel and E10 after the sharp early-April rise. The overall level remains high because the oil market and the new noon rule still keep the market tense.

Price Forecast 2026

€1.90-2.10

The Iran war and CO2 tax have pushed prices to yearly highs. Experts expect continued volatility while the conflict persists.

CO2 Tax Increase

€55/tonne

The CO2 levy rises to €55 per tonne, adding approximately 4-5 cents per liter to fuel prices.

Best Refueling Time

check before & after 12:00

The new rule makes the hours before 12:00 more strategically relevant. Price cuts later in the day are still possible, so comparing remains essential.

E-Fuels Development

New 2026

New EU regulations for synthetic fuels take effect, expanding options at the pump.
